As the Class of 2010 celebrates the joy of graduation and leaps forward towards the promising prospects following yet another outstanding cohort at Meridian, I’d like to take this opportunity to pay tribute to the great success we have achieved as a CCA in the past two years.

This website was launched as part of a publicity campaign during Open House and CCA Recruitment Drive 2010. As most of you already know, these events turned out to be true triumphs and a great testament to the effective teamwork, organisation and efficiency of our various committees. Sales targets were exceeded, overwhelming response were received and smiles were there to end the day.

One very exciting element of this experience was our collaboration with 77th Street, taking the form of the mutual publicity campaign “Style Spot”, which saw some of our members spearhead the design concept and work closely with the senior team in bringing the action to life. We were also granted a prize sponsorship of cash vouchers in the same year.

External partners aside, I’m also very proud to say that our success in enterprise competitions, whether on the national scale or the international arena, has been rather exceptional. Just to highlight some of our best, we came in 1st in ASEAN at the ASEANpreneurs Alpha Challenge 2009, taking home the grand prize of $3000; in the same competition the following year: “ASEANpreneurs Idea Canvas 2010″, one of our teams ended the competition as TOP 10 Finalists in the ASEAN region, and a top contender locally. We also placed in other competitions such as the MYMCA Global ExoroGame Challenge, ranking amongst other formidable teams from countries such as Vietnam and the Philippines.

Our involvement in the local entrepreneurial scene is one other praiseworthy effort of our club. In 2010, we had the valuable opportunity of having members invited to join the Organising Committee of the acclaimed Youth Entrepreneurship Symposium, an annual programme initiated by NTUC nEbO and organised by selected youth leaders. I believe such occasions – along with our active participation in events locally and internationally – is the reason behind many of our successes.

As President, it is most heartening for me to have witnessed this growth. As I’ve said in the interview article “Leading Meridians” by College Musings, it really is an “extraordinary experience.” But more importantly, it is the passing on of such a result-effective, yet learning-intensive club that excites me; after-all, isn’t this what entrepreneurship is about?

As I end this article, I’d like to express my joy and gratitude to the Executive Committee for their guidance and views, the Event Committees for their prime execution, and our college representatives at the various competitions who have brought us glory and given us something to take pride and believe in.

Why should I join BizClub, what has it got to offer?

Well…in terms of rigour, BizClub holds ONE official meeting every Wed (CCA day), hence we’re easy on your endless timetables (and tutorials and test and and and)

We also craft our activities in a way that benefits you the most, in terms of personal development, as well as your exposing you to a varied spectrum of enterprise-related experience!

• Learning to plan and oversee events:

Here at BizClub, we guide you in planning events such as Open House/Vday/CNY promotions. Every Special Project, such as Open House and Chinese New Year, will be managed by a committee with an IC and members. You’ll get to work with your Special Project Committee members to craft simple and concise proposals that will actually come to life. 

• Business Basics:

BizClub also operates the Perkafe, a student-run cafe near the Sports Block gallery. Bizclub members get to experience selling ice-cream, brownies and drinks to your peers. Perkafe also welcomes fresh ideas, for instance:

- Ice Cream: {product improvement}    from Walls’ to Swensen’s

- Brownies: {product innovation}   brownie with Swensen’s ice-cream, {product improvement}   from brandless to POSH brownies

- Tropical Blizzard: {product innovation}   multi-flavoured ice-blends

 Additionally, the cafe now has a new attraction, the MJC STUDENT LOUNGE (under construction), which is fully air-conditioned and will be decked out with awesome trendy furniture!

• Real-world Opportunities:

Ever wondered how sponsorships are garnered or how a business programme is started? Well…you can stop wondering and start initiating!:) Having clinched a sponsorship (of cash vouchers for Open House) by 77th Street, as well as a Business Programme with the School of Thought (underway: details below), we’re certain that YOU are capable of grabbing such wonderful opportunities. Such sponsorships and initiated programmes will definitely give a you tremendous boost in terms of the actual experience in engaging in such projects, involving negotiations and real-world considerations.

• Competitions:

 BizClub is actively involved in several competitions, mainly by NUS. For e.g., we won 1st place (asean region) for NUS Entre Society’s ASEANpreneur Challenge 09, as well as National TOP 15 in the Metropolitan YMCA ExoroGame Challenge 09. BizClub has won several awards at the prestigious Start-Up@Singapore competition.

• Organisational Efficiency:

Our club operates through 5 main sectors: Marketing, Business Development, Corporate Affairs/HR, Finance, Operation & Inventory, each led by a Director (exco), with a committee of members:)

• Hwa Chong Business Forum

• MJC-SOT Business Model Programme: We’re currently discussing a business programme involving School of Thought(SOT), a case-study business model at NUS Business School, where members can go down to SOT to understand more about their way of operation that has proved successful.
